It's Serge Gasinsbourg's 27th anniversary this month. Time to mark the occasion although no excuse is needed. The ageless 'Bonnie & Clyde' with Brigitte Bardot and a lovely late years version of 'La Javanaise' by Jane Birkin . A beautful hushed Yo La Tengo number sung by Georgia. Breezy jazz pop from the top drawer from The Sea & Cake . And lush power pop from Mr Ben Montero of Melbourne via Athens. More on these pages. Serge Gainsbourg died 25 years ago this month. Always room at UOH Towers to pay tribute to that legend. Whyte Horses (pic) are a new band on me, making some lovely psych pop, sung in French here which is always good. This is the Kit can also do French, brilliantly, and they play Cork in April. More Giorgio Tuma , loving that album, sitting somewhere between Stereolab/High Llamas and Ennio Morricone. And Britta Phillips (of Luna, Dean & Britta), debut album out next month. Check Bert Jansch goodies out for Record Store Day on Earth Records . And a nice little electronic run with Iggy Pop taking Walt Whitman on a journey with Tarwater & Alva Noto and gorgeous ambient sounds from Qluster . And Orchestra of Spheres , the best bonkers music to shake your ass to. More on these pages. Serge Gainsbourg

I've been going back through one of my favourite DVD's, Serge Gainsbourg : D'autres nouvelles des étoiles , a 2 x disc compilation of tv appearances, broadcasts and interviews from 1958 to 1989, which Mercury/Universal brought out in 2005. It's fascinating stuff and gives a thorough overview of every stage in Gainsbourg's career, from the early jazz-influenced tunes, to lush string orchestrations, and on to later reggae experiments. (As with everything, I'm sure you might find a free download somehere, but the extensive sleevenotes and credits make it well worth the purchase price.) It was Mick Harvey's Gainsbourg cover albums of the 1990's (interpretations is probably a better word), which my friend Grand Snr turned me on to, that gave me a proper obsession with the man. Those were Intoxicated man (1995) and Pink elephants (1997), both on Mute Records . This was the first time (that I know of) that Gainsbourg's lyrics had been translated into ...
