A couple of Cork bands taking to the road soon on the show this week. The Bonk feature Philip Christie from O Emperor and friends. On their debut album there’s a great mix of doomsday jazz and prog pop with some swamp rock on the side. Fixity you’ll know if you’re a regular listener to the show. Based around drummer (and many other things) Dan Walsh and a rotating cast of collaborators. Thrilling dreamy soundscapes you can dance to. Imagine. Also. Cool Ghouls , wonderful Byrds meets Creedence Clearwater Revival grooves. PINS , more stirring anti anthems – “I’m only here to serve the rich.” And some autumnal gems from The Kinks & Lee Hazlewood . More on these pages. The Kinks – Autumn almanac

Image
It actually felt like autumn there for a week or two. Winter now for sure in this northern hemisphere. Once the Christmas lights arrive, autumn knows it’s not welcome any more. Those high street window displays give it the right bum’s rush. There are very few songs paying tribute to autumn, have you noticed*. Plenty for spring, summer and winter but autumn seems to hold no glamour for songwriters. Just a stopping off point between the warm and cold rushes of July and December. A gloomy counterpoint to the growth and renewal and libido of spring. Maybe it’s a reflection of the discomfort we in the west feel about death. It’s more of a season for poetry, apparently, mists and mellow fruitfulness and all the rest. And poetry seems to fit better with musings of mortality than pop music. *Although this link does a good job of making a case – Autumn is in the Air by Buiochas on Mixcloud I suppose ‘California dreamin’ would be one (even though it’s a winter’s day, all the...

Autumn music to start the show this week, the classic bittersweet hymn to the changing of the seasons from The Kinks - trumpets, backwards tape, Sunday roast, the whole lot. C Duncan dreaming of winter and Pure Bathing Culture praying for rain. Some excellent drone material in the next section - Owensie with a flamenco guitar flavour, The Leaf Library giving a nod to Yo La Tengo (shakers), Steeple Remove pumping out the motorik jams. Arresting pastoral tones from Laura Cannell ; deep folk from Finland/Ireland by Slow Moving Clouds . And gorgeous chamber pop with a Peeping Tom edge from Paperface . More on these pages. A couple of things working on a vaguely Brazilian theme this week. Sergio Mendes & crew from 1966 with some sublime bossa. Then Sun Kil Moon from this year treating his poetic soul songs to some sunny classical guitars and saxophone. Sabina brought it north a bit with a lovely mariachi vibe. SlowPlaceLikeHome is another sound of summer, but closer to Berlin via Donegal. We had the husband and wife split 7" from Rachael Dadd and Ichi , love both of those. (She encourages him to make a sentence, he responds with gibberish and mosquito noises!...or that's my interpretation anyway...) A much darker mid-section with the brooding orchestra of Roll The Dice , the stalking bass pulse of Automat with vocals by Lydia Lunch & the tortured sax meditation of Polar Bear . Chris Stroffolino is a fascinating sounding character I'll come back to, among other things he's a fan of The Kinks , as am I, and sure who isn't? More on these pages. June 24 2014 w/ S...
