Best of 2016 - Part 2: Pop/Soul/Indie

Image
Part 2 of this list, out of four in total, the others to follow in January. There will be another Best of Mix also over the next week, stay tuned to Mixcloud. ********************************************************************* 1. Trashcan Sinatras – Let me inside (Or let me out) A monumental year for fans of this treasured Scottish band. A new crowdfunded album, the wonderful Wild pendulum , possibly their best ever work, and tours in America and Europe. And having seen them play live in November, the big insight (other than the obvious genius on show) was the sheer soulfulness of the songs. So yeah, top notch tunes and buckets of soul. I’ll take that any year. http://theundergroundofhappiness.blogspot.ie/2016/11/trashcan-sinatras-workmans-club-dublin.html Track 14 in this playlist 2. Britta Phillips – One fine summer morning (from the album Luck or magic, Double Feature) Another artist I saw play live in 2016. In these thoughts from last June, I was zoning...

August Wells – Madness is the mercy (FIFA Records)

Image
One last album for this month. A sumptuous set of bruised chamber soul built around the swooning vibrato of Ken Griffin and the perfectly judged brass, wind and string arrangements of John Rauchenberger . Sad songs, songs of loss and regret but with a great dignity, some kind of bearing about them which is warm and welcoming. The late night sound of New York, as it appears to us who do not live there. Enduring. Satisfying. Strangely uplifting. A wonderful piece of work.

Say hello to Whitney who sound a bit like Neil Young fronting The Band, that is to say a beautiful thing. William Tyler has a new album out soon, more beautiful guitar (with band) instrumentals contemplating the state of America today. August Wells are touring over here soon, another great song of bruised soul music from them, album coming later in the year. And Rozi Plain , sublime kosmische folk, playing the Clonmel Junction Festival in July. More on these pages as always. August Wells – Here in the wild (FIFA Records)

Image
Back to the Best of 2015 Mid Year Review . Here’s a tune that featured in that set from a group playing in Ireland soon and released on local Cork stalwarts FIFA Records . “ August Wells is Ken Griffin (the creative mind behind the groups Rollerskate Skinny, Kid Silver and Favourite Sons) and John Rauchenberger (New York pianist who has played with The Favourite Sons, Maggie Estep and Daniel Carter among others). Their music has just begun to make its mark, but already has been described as “strange other worldly chamber music”, “Sinatra singing Lou Reed songs” and “a secret marriage of Willy Nelson and Lee Hazlewood”. It could also be described as songs to walk across your troubled heart.” Interesting reference points, says you. On this song, that core duo of piano and voice is augmented by a gorgeous sympathetic arrangement of strings, flute and saxophone. Sympathetic to the song. Enhancing it. It’s kinda louche, a bit sad and very lovely and in a certain light it’s al...

We kicked off this week with some classic Luna who are reforming to play some shows this year. Especially beautiful about this song is the driving bassline by Britta Phillips . The new single from Swedish duo Death & Vanilla , another gorgeous wash of dreamy psych pop. The new Aloa Input album has lovely shades of early Beck and the Beta Band a bit, the latter are in there too from 1997 sounding like Beck jamming with Can. A couple of great Tropicalia cuts, Os Mutantes from 1968 and Gal Costa putting the cosmic soul back into acid rock. Lower Dens not neglecting the motorik, Smile Down Upon Us with some wonderfully daft and breezy pop music. Jean-Claude Vannier marshalling a female choir of chants and footstamps and fingerclicks. And August Wells feat. Ken Griffin ex Rollerskate Skinny channelling Scott Walker beautifully. More on these pages. Laurie Shaw Interview

Here's the full audio now of that interview with Laurie Shaw - we had a few minutes of it on the show this week. We recorded it sitting outside at The Pavilion in Cork during the June heatwave, while Laurie was taking a break from rehearsing for an upcoming gig with his band. Laurie is originally from The Wirral near Liverpool (as is quickly evident from his accent) but has lived in Kerry for almost 10 years. He started recording using his Dad's equipment at home and has amassed more than 30 albums to date. You can find a selection on these links - http://laurieshaw.wordpress.com/music/ and https://soundcloud.com/laurie-shaw . I'll post some examples down the page. I first came across his name through Plugd Records in Cork last February, when they posted one of his soundcloud or youtube links. I believe you can buy some of his music in there too. Which is something you should do. The first bunch of songs I heard had a distinct Garage Rock flavour (Laurie himself ...

Playlist 300 - Feb 25 2014 - Eddie Kiely (FIFA Records) Interview

For the 300th edition of the show I invited Eddie Kiely of Cork's FIFA Records into studio to talk about the label, how it was set up, and to play some music from their upcoming releases by The Vincent(s) and Elastic Sleep . We also chatted about Eddie's own musical influences and tastes from early Smiths and MBV , to current faves Dissolutes , Land Lovers , The Careers and Girl Band . Eddie has been involved in the music business for about 20 years, having been associated with Cork's "first wave" of label signings in the 1990s as manager of Emperor of Ice Cream (The Emperors). FIFA have had notable releases in the last year by The Frank & Walters and The Would Bes.
